Strand: NEW!, Family and Community Collaboration Conference Session GWednesday, October 17, 2007 8:30–9:45 amG5 Overview of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act This presentation will provide an overview of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. This civil rights legislation directly affects every teacher and administrator in a public school setting. Learn how to best meet the needs of students who require a 504 plan. Strand: NEW!, Best Practices G8 The Joel Bridgman Mentor Program This workshop includes a multimedia presentation that highlights how to set up a successful mentor program at your school. This mentoring program is highly successful in the K–6 setting, but may be adapted to fit any school setting. Strand: NEW!, Engaging At-Risk Students G10 Probation and School Success The Probation and School Success Program (PASS) has five site-based officers who deal with over 60% of the total district student population. This preventive program focuses on violence reduction, truancy issues, child abuse reduction, reduction in referrals to the criminal justice system, and a coordination of resources at the school level. Strand: NEW!, Family and Community Collaboration G11 Insiders vs. Outsiders: Building Successful School/Community Partnerships The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) has found that a quality dropout prevention plan cannot be completed without developing a strong and vibrant partnership with grassroots community organizations and faith-based groups. This session will look at how the MDE was able to successfully develop this partnership and provide best practices for other states seeking to do the same.
