Funding is needed to keep M&M program services happening.
Education Alliance is currently seeking foundation support to provide bridge funding for the proven and successful Motivation and Maintenance (M&M) Program implemented by our network member schools. The M&M program is a dropout prevention and student achievement program in targeted California public schools that have been historically low-achieving and under-resourced.
We are seeking support of $1.85 million per year, for two years, as bridge funding for 37 schools that will lose California State funding during this difficult budget year. Please consider supporting this program. For more information, please contact Kath Robinson, Development Director, at kathrobinson@cruzio.com.
Background:
Each year, more than 190,000 students in California public schools are at risk of failing school, of not reaching their full potential, or of dropping out. The M&M program was designed to address this problem and represents both a rethinking of traditional educational practice and an innovative synthesis of experience and best-practices research. Schools using the M&M model have an outreach consultant who works with students, parents, staff, and community for early identification of problems and support for student success. The outreach consultant—the critical linchpin for the success of the M&M program—facilitates a schoolwide cultural change and fosters schoolwide responsibility for the children at the school. Although the program requires the entire school community to be involved with student success, more than fifteen years of experience and results with this program show that one person—the outreach consultant—makes a critical difference.
Currently, funding for the M&M program comes from the state general fund. The funding will allow CDPN to ensure the continuation of this innovative and successful program by providing each school with $50,000 for the salary, fringe benefits, travel, and related employment costs of the outreach consultant position.
If you would like to learn more about challenges and successes at a specific school you are interested in funding, we would be happy to make such information available to you. We can also provide you with a list of schools that are currently involved with the M&M program and a document summarizing the characteristics of these schools.
Together, we can make a difference for the disenfranchised and disempowered children in public schools throughout California.
